Film Pricing by Square Foot (DTF & Vinyl)

Convert design inches to ft², then multiply by your film rate for honest material cost.

By

Worked example: roll price divided by square feet equals dollars per square foot, then design area times rate for film cost share.

Direct answer: Convert design inches to square feet, then multiply by your film $/ft². On gang sheets, cost the sheet share you actually used — not a fantasy where every logo pays only for its own rectangle with zero waste.

Formula

Area (ft²) = (width in × height in) ÷ 144
Film cost ≈ area × film $/ft²

Worked example (illustrative rates)

Design 10 × 12 in. Illustrative film rate $0.45 / ft² (replace with your invoice):

  1. Area = 120 ÷ 144 = 0.833 ft²
  2. Film ≈ 0.833 × 0.45 ≈ $0.37 for that rectangle alone

If the same art sits on a half-empty gang sheet, your true film cost per transfer is higher because you bought unused sheet. Plan packing with the DTF Gang Sheet Calculator, convert units with Square Inches ↔ Square Feet, then finish unit cost in the DTF Cost Calculator.

FAQ

Should I price art area or full sheet?

Cost from sheet reality (including gaps and unused space). You may still quote customers per design if that is clearer.

Does vinyl use the same math?

Yes for area × $/ft². Weed waste and transfer tape are extra — add them as separate lines.

Where does $0.45/ft² come from?

It is an illustrative PressMath planning default in examples — replace it with your roll price ÷ roll area.
